Rory Maxwell, F’70

An account from his friend at Falcon

Rory Maxwell

Remembering Rory Maxwell (Founders 1966-1970) who died on 16th March 1980 of cerebral malaria whilst on active duty with 1RR in the Mt.Darwin area.

Rory and I grew up together, we lived on the same road in Greendale, Salisbury. We went to junior school and senior school together. After Falcon, Rory attended Commercial Careers College but it is not known what he pursued after that.

I was on duty as Adjutant of 1RR Main in Mt Darwin when I received a call for an urgent helicopter casevac from a Company base in the field. One of their guys was seriously ill.

I despatched the helicopter and put the camp hospital and Doctor on standby. When the chopper arrived the casevac was brought into the hospital…it was my responsibility to get the soldier’s details, next of kin etc

I discovered the patient was my childhood friend, Rory Maxwell. The decision was taken to urgently move him to Andrew Fleming hospital in Salisbury as his condition was deteriorating so fast.

When the chopper landed at the hospital we were advised that Rory had died en route, and it was later determined that he had died of cerebral malaria.

Rest in Peace old friend…never, ever to be forgotten.

Had two weeks hols after Falcon, then joined the BSAP for a 2-year contract; did Police Display, horse escorts & a posting to Inyanga (hardship huh!), then bought myself out in June '81. Moved to UK a month later, did a course in advertising and marketing, then got a job with a small ad agency in Wimbledon before moving to my current job with Grass Roots Group, where I design processes for motivation websites. Home life = wife Nicola + 4 daughters & 2 sons; also help out at my local lifeboat station, and am keen on photography (www.flickr.com/photos/bushtick), singing with a chamber choir and a bit on the side for the Falcon Old Boys.
